Business Highlight: Meet Chyna Shorty, Lead Designer for Accessory Closet By Shalise Newsome

by

“After working 7+ years in the criminal Justice System I decided to go in prayer and ask God what was next? What could I do to expose my personality and my character and just…who I am?”

As a lover of fashion and a trendsetter, Chyna Shorty provides a platform to help women figure out what type of designs they like and effortlessly pulls out their inner style through her line of jewelry.  Some of us can be very indecisive and just overall “lost in the sauce” when it comes to finding our inner fashionista!

Many people are “lost in the sauce” about their professional life in general.  Well Chyna was no different.

“I knew that I needed to do something that would entail me moving every day. Talking to people every day. Helping people every day.”

Attending Clark Atlanta University for her Undergrad and Grad studies, she majored in Criminal Justice.  Chyna went on to pursue a career in the Criminal Justice System as a Juvenile Counselor where she served for 7 years.

Like most of us, she hit a period of not being fulfilled or fully present in her career; even after spending thousands of dollars in tuition, endless hours of study and class time, years of traditional employment and two years of seeking, resting and praying.

“In the midst of me communicating with God he had something different for me.”

Fast forward to today, Arm Candy by Chyna has exploded!  She celebrated her One Year Anniversary just a few months ago and successfully launched Accessory Closet.  Accessory Closet covers a range of styles from traditional to trendy, to elegant and sophisticated accessories for men, women and children.

Shalise:  What has been instrumental in you being a success so early?

Chyna:  To be quite frank, it’s been me tithing. I’ve never understood the importance of sowing and giving that seed time to harvest. You hear your parents talk about setting aside 10% for Church but I never really knew how important it was until I became an adult and had my own money…The little bit I had wasn’t enough for my dreams and for my vision. So I said, I’ve tried everything else everyone else’s way..let me try this God’s way. And I first-fruited for the very first time this year and the blessing has just rested.  That has been the force behind Arm Candy even blossoming and expanding into Accessory Closet.

Pictured above is a set of Chyna’s favorite pieces.  Can you tell she’s a New Orleans native? A fleur de lis to remind her of her roots. A symbol of peace and hope to keep at the forefront of her mind throughout her busy day and a trendsetting jewel tone to add her unique flair.

“Whatever your style is you can tell your story through your arm candy.”
