If you appreciate culture, art and love history then you will love the Mashantucket Pequot (PEE-Kwott) Museum. The museum is located in Mashantucket Connecticut just five minutes from Foxwoods Casino. The museum is full of wonderful exhibits and each exhibit tells a story and a period of time of the lives of the Pequot Indians.
The Museum is actually owned by the Native Americans and is full of culture and history of the Pequot Tribal Nation. The exhibits are comprised of wax figures set up in villages of how the natives lived. There are even exhibits of the outdoors displaying how they went about hunting for their survival.
The Pequot and the Mohegan Indians was once one tribe until the Mohegan separated from them and formed their own tribe. The language spoken was the Mohegan-Pequot language, but they now speak English. The two are currently working on reviving the language.
What you will find more intriguing is the film of how the natives were taken down by, “The White Man.” The heart break and destruction of villages and killing of the natives will leave you sympathetic, angry and sad. If you are not moved by the film, then you wouldn’t appreciate it.
During the warm months the natives at the museum will actually sit outside and cook a native meal which they will allow you to sample. There is a café located indoors along with the welcoming of wax figures in their canoe that looks pretty life like.
When you visit the museum you will develop such an appreciation of the culture, the art, the history and most of all the people. It will be an experience you will want to share and bring the family to enjoy.
