One thing you can say about music is that there are no boundaries or color lines. Music reaches all cultures and ethnic backgrounds that touch the souls of many through diverse genres, whether it’s Pop, Hip-Hop, Country, Jazz or R&B!
This artist comes with a style of his own. Although he’s been compared to legends before him, his new age style of pop, rock-fusion and hip-hop is in a class by himself. The 34 year old Matthew Schultz is this year’s newest singing sensation and he took the time to speak to us on his singing career.
NYAH- I’ve read your bio and I know that your uncles all played the guitar and you began playing the guitar at the age of 8. Did your family teach you how to play or did you learn on your own?
Matthew – I actually learned by ear. I never had guitar lessons a day in my life.
NYAH – I know that you father passed away from a heart attack, but how did it impact your life?
Matthew- My father was a wonderful man and was always there for me. We went through rough times. My mom was a stay at home mom and my father worked as a Police Officer at the prosecutor’s office. We lived from month to month and my father did whatever he had to do to be a good father. He did volunteer work and was there for me at every game. He encouraged me to be a great person!
NYAH- You mentioned that you and former contestant of season 5 American Idol Chris Daughtry went to high school together, did the two of you ever work together musically? Do you still keep in contact?
Matthew- We were actually in a band together in high school, he would come over to my house and we’d play at schools, events and play at birthday parties. We parted ways with him moving to North Carolina and me moving back to New Jersey after my dad passed. We still keep in touch from time to time.
NYAH-You’re a fan of the Dave Matthews Band and performed with some of the members, did the group break up and did your performance include playing the guitar, singing or both? What was the experience like?
Matthew- I love their music and there was nothing like it, they had a new sound! They played at local venues and their following grew. One member, a piano player developed his own group “Super Tanker,” and I would occasionally play the guitar with them on stage. It was fun and I had a great time with them.
NYAH-You graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Finance right? And you played college football, did you ever wanted to go pro?
Matthew- I majored in Finance with a minor in Psychology. I played college football, but I chose to forego my ability to go further. I had to take care of my family.
NYAH- Now, let’s talk about your acting career. You had a role in the short film “Redemptio,” did you play the guitar or sing?
Matthew- No, I had a small role and I’m enjoying acting as well as singing.
NYAH- You mentioned in your bio that musician and director Armando Guanera inspired you to pursue your musical career even more, please elaborate?
Matthew- I met Armando about 6 years ago. I was brought in to help his daughter, singer Alexia Guarnera in regards to her singing career. I’ve written songs for them and Armando has helped brought every idea I had come to life!
NYAH- Your music seems to be a in an unknown category at this point by the music industry because you’re music is a cross between, house, hip-hop and rock fusion. You seem very diverse which is great, how would you label yourself?
Matthew- I grew up listening to hip-hop, rock fusion, pop-rock and music from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. My music is diverse. I would say I would be considered pop-rock.
NYAH-Tell us about this new single “Money or Me,” featuring hip hop artist Jim Jones and what can fans expect?
Matthew- You don’t know for what reason a person is with you. As you get older you question things. It’s a generic concept! I want fans to be motivated by positivity and my real life experiences. I want them to relate to my music and rock out!
NYAH- Let’s talk about your look. You’re compared with having a sort of James Dean look with a Johnny Cash sound with a rock star edge, would you agree with that?
Matthew- I’m sort shy with the comparisons. I love the classical look, the Sinatra era and my demeanor matches the look with some saying that I have a Johnny cash sound. I think it wonderful!
NYAH- Do you have any final thoughts or comments that you’d like to share?
Matthew- I feel so blessed and thankful for my family, loved ones and co-workers. Even though my father has passed, I feel like he’s looking down on me and encourages me to reach for the stars!
