If you haven’t already meet the Author of the book “Sin Eaters : Devotion” …. Kai Leakes read NYAH Magazines interview with her. You can purchase a copy of her awesome book via Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
NYAH Magazine- The name ”Kai Leakes” is that a ghost name? If so where did it come from and why did you create this pen name verses using your given name?
Kai Leakes- Yes, Kai Leakes is my pen name. Kai comes from the first part of my real name and Leakes is my actual family’s linage name, (if that is the correct term for it, LOL) I just added an ‘S’ at the end. Well i chose a pen name because i felt as if I wanted to keep my personal life to myself and my writing separate somewhat. My name is not really that far fetched, but I did it that way due to that.
NYAH Magazine- Tell NYAH readers a little about Sin Eaters; the process behind the title. How many volumes or parts? How long did you work on it?
Kai Leakes- Well Sin Eaters is a paranormal romantic-action fantasy novel. This is how I coin it. It goes something like this, have you ever been in situations that weren’t any good for you? Have you ever been a part of a situation where you almost lost your life or could have been in a horrible situation, but something stopped it from happening? This is an every day occurrence for Sanna Steele. She falls into this world that she had no idea existed in St. Louis, Missouri. It swoops her up and changes her life for ever. All due to a chance meeting from a man who has been unknowingly protecting her, her whole life.
My baby, that is what I call it, actually came to me in a dream. For me, my stories may come to me out of no where, through a character introducing themselves to me, or if they want to be cocky, they come to me in a dream. For me it is like a movie. I saw vampires, demons, a army of fighters and things flying in the air. That something was Khamun and I saw the woman he was protecting as Sanna. I thought it was nothing, but I kept having the dream and I said, well okay, let me write some of it down. That is how it was born.
The title came about after realizing that Death Eaters were in Harry Potter. So I did a search, found out the history of Sin Eaters and that was how the title was born. Sin Eaters was suppose to be several stories about the different characters in the book. We were suppose to follow Sanna on her journey. Ultimately, when I was blessed with the chance of being published, I was asked to make it a two-book series. This story started in 2007 actually and just sat there, until I showed it to my pen muse Nikki-Michelle. She read a little of it and demanded I finish it, then submit it. (LOL- Laugh Out Loud) She was kind of adamant about it because she fell in love with my work. I was shocked and happy all in one. So, during that time, it was Nov. 2009, I finished it in 2010, several months later.

NYAH Magazine- Take us into the development of you as an Author. What was your 1st book published or maybe your 1st book you never had published? Was this your career path since a child or a field you found yourself in by faith? How many published books do you have out there? Do you have a specific area of writing you prefer? Like only fiction or do you write on various topics such as sci-fi, autobiographies, children’s books etc. how did you get introduced to writing?
Kai Leakes- My development as an Author is still very much growing. I actually do not feel I am an Author because I only have one book and I’m still a learning novice. Prior to Sin Eaters, I did have another story which I had finished first. It was my ode to having a super-kick butt (s)hero. I never had it publish, it’s something that I may work on later. As a child, I always had this creative imagination. My mother fed my love for books and fantasy so I guess that led me to where I am today. As a teen I use to craft stories for my cousins whenever they visited. They’s ask me to come up a story that had them in it, and I’d share what I came up it. That definitely set me on my path. I never thought I’d actually write.
I officially put my mind on paper off and on in High School then college. Nothing was ever finished until I graduated from College and found myself having nothing to do but write.
NYAH Magazine- Nyah magazine is a faith based magazine and we would like to know about your beliefs. Do you consider yourself a Christian, Atheist, Methodist etc? What were you raised to believe from your parents/guardian?
Kai Leakes- My family comes from a Baptist background, but I grew up in a spiritual household. I later gained a COGIC background, so I call myself Penebaptist if you can believe it (LOL). A lot of my spirituality is reflected in Sin Eaters.
NYAH Magazine- What writing projects are you currently working on? Can you write more than one book at a time?
Kai Leakes- I have several projects just sitting right now. Sometimes I can write one book at a time, but if I’m writing in the same genre, it’s a little harder for me, only because I’m scared I may cross certain details over in other books. As of now, Sin Eaters is done for the time being, so I have a fantasy novel, I’m researching which is based in a Afro-Steampunk environment. I also have two other romantic fictions waiting for me to expand and finish as well.
NYAH Magazine- What other passions/careers do you have? How did they come about?
Kai Leakes- Well, this is a fun question. I love to cook. At one point, I was supposed to get a scholarship to go to cooking school when I was in High School but sadly, my teacher missed the deadline, so that led me to going to college and doing something else. I hold a masters in Counseling, which I enjoyed. I’m working on gaining my license for that. I have an obsession with Barnes and Noble, which means I’m very much a book nerd. What some may not know, I have a love for photography and self-taught myself graphic design. These things are my passions.
NYAH Magazine- Who’s your biggest fan (that you know)? Who’s that one person always cheering you on to do better, to be better, to read your book first etc.?
Kai Leakes- My family and friends are my biggest fans so far. My pen-muse, Author Nikki-Michele always is my link in helping in during my development of my work. She typically always is the first person to read my work. She also is the the on who is always either yelling at me to keep writing, or asking if I’m writing, or when will I share a new chapter. She is that one I’m always side-eyeing and fussing at. I am blessed to have a support system of family and friends.
Also, outside of my great fans commenting to me through Sin Eater’s growth, I have several male followers too, which is amazing! I am so happy that my work is able to grab men too, who love the action just as much as me.
NYAH Magazine- Do you have a favorite author? Why?
Kai Leakes- I have two favorite Authors, but if you couldn’t tell already, one is, L.A. Banks. She turned my world upside down after Anne Rice finished her Vampire series. Momma Banks as her fans called her, brought the color that I needed in my books. She gave me an education wrapped around romance, vampires and butt-kicking.
NYAH Magazine- Is reading books a passion of yours?
Kai Leakes- Yes it is. LOL I have an obsession with reading. I’m a book and movie nerd.
NYAH Magazine- Last book you read? Give us your review, was it what you expected?
Kai Leakes- I haven’t really read a book in enjoyment for a while, but the last I read was Nikki-Michele’s “Tell Me No Secrets”. That book…wow. It was a page turner that made me want to throw her book at a wall. Not because it was bad, but because her characters were that good. #TeamJamie #BooAric That’s all I can share about it. LOL

Loved the thoroughness of the interview. So, informative. Really nice to get to know the authors. Thanks for sharing Kia.
