Growing up in the streets as a youth in urban areas can lead to a life of crime, drugs jail and even death. Some youth accept their fate and believe that the streets is all there is with nothing more to offer than preserving an image and making a name for themselves by being part of a gang or simply showing that their “street certified.”
One former street “Goon” known as G2S (Goon2Saint) who grew up in Halem, NY but raised in Richmond, VA and the Bronx has shown us that nothing is impossible. After being locked up on several occasions for gun possesion and disorderly conduct, G2S decided that he had enough and began a relationship with God during his incarceration. “My grandmother had always taught me about God, but being young I never wanted to listen. I finally decided that I was going to give my life God so I joined the church and became a Gospel rapper.”
When he made the conscious decision to give himself to God his friends didn’t really think he was serious, but they soon realized that he was in fact serious and committed. He received and continues to receive support from his pastor, mother and friends and says that the church keeps him rooted and grounded.
We asked G2S what would he like to tell young youth today that is trying to fit in and fall under peer pressure with temptation of going down the wrong path and he responded by saying; “It’s not worth it, I’ve been there! Find your own way and live in a positive way. Know that God is is real and will always be there even when no one else is.”
